in Transylvania. During this time, he tried to 

keep his word for the sultan, however he 

tried to get closer to the Habsburgs, too. 

The Turks forced him lots of times to take 

part as vassal in the war campaigns started 

against the Habsburgs. But Apafi satisfied 

them only partly: for example in 1683, at 

the time of war campaign against Vienna, 

he kept contact with the defenders of the 

besieged imperial town. Apafi was a well 

read men, who was very much interested 

about science, fact why he liked to retire to 

his books and his experimental instruments. 

This is why, during his ruling, chancellor 

Teleki Mihály and  princess Bornemissza 

Anna got to important roles. 

  Although, at Vienna, the Turks being 

defeated, then in 1686 Buda was set free 

from under the one and a half century held 

Turk rules, the Turks persecuting emperor's

army was spending the next years winter 

on the lands of Transylvania. in the year of 

1688 Apafi and the Transylvanian Jury (by 

being forced) resigns from the Turks 

patronage, and for successive king they 

acknowledge emperor Leopold. Count  

Apafi Mihály the 1st. died in 1690 and his 

chosen and elected son will be removed 

from Transylvania by the emperors.
